NKSD Budget Update
The legislatures in the House and Senate reached an agreement on additional reductions that will affect the 2010-11 budget. This is a significant development because there is a better idea of what NKSD is facing this year.
New items that impact district funding for 2010-11 include:
- K-4 class size enhancement funding is cut by 50% from Sept. 1, 2010 thru Jan. 1, 2011. With the previous elimination of funding for Feb. 1 thru June 15, 2011, this means a total loss of approximately $500,000 in funding for this school year.
- Funding provided for school food service federal matching funds is reduced by about $16,000.
- Additional program and administrative cuts previously estimated at $35,000 will be cut more. As of now, it is not clear by how much.
- Funding for the highly capable program that was being considered for reduction is now protected and no cuts will be made.
At this time, the district believes that despite the new legislative developments and lost revenue, there will not be any reductions to staffing during the existing school year.

Talking Law with Your Teen (parents and students)
Attorney Ryan Witt will help you navigate some of the awkward but necessary discussion topics facing pre-teens and teenagers. Do you have a senior dating a freshman? Are you unclear about restrictions facing your teen’s driving? Are you wondering how your teen’s actions might impact your insurance or financial security? Do you believe a ‘little experimenting’ is just a natural stage for young people? There are new consequences for your teen’s actions. Make sure you and your child understand the law and how it can affect you. Come for a discussion and get informed. Talk will be held April 20 from 6:30–8:30pm at NKHS Commons. Contact Nikki Fowler MA, CDP, Prevention Counselor NKHS (360) 598-8487, nfowler@nkschools.org.
North Kitsap High School Grad Night
Parents of seniors: the Grad Night Committee has been busy planning for a fun and safe all-night graduation party for your senior. The students have received the information about Grad Night, but we wanted to make sure that it is getting passed on to parents as well. June 10 just happens to be the most popular day for Graduation in 2011. This means that the earlier we receive registrations, the sooner we are able to pay for our venues and begin finalizing additional activities and entertainment before they get booked. We also want to offer scholarships to anyone who might need it.
Forms and up-to-date information may be found on the NKHS website under Headlines; Senior Grad Night Information – so please check often. Info: Gillian Hansen at ghansen2107@embarqmail.com.

Puget Sound Energy
PSE Adds Online Energy Efficiency Services for Business Customers
Puget Sound Energy launched new online services that will help business owners track, analyze and manage their energy use in addition to making payments online. The new PSE business portal provides links and Web pages that can inform businesses about PSE incentive programs and promotions as well as a Bill Analyzer that helps customers understand how weather fluctuations, billing cycles and rate changes affect their costs.
"The new online services provide an excellent way for businesses, and small businesses especially, to see how they are doing with energy use, and to adjust some of their business practices in order to help them save energy and money," said Bill Younger, manager of Business Energy Management for PSE. "It gives business owners a way to track their use and stay within their budget." All PSE customers can view their account summary along with their payment history and make payment arrangements. The new tools give business owners the ability to assess and modify their energy usage and indentify site-specific energy-saving measures and opportunities.
PSE Business customers can access these new online services by visiting the homepage at PSE.com, and signing up under "My PSE Account" for "Business Customers."

Kitsap Mental Health Services
KMHS Foster Care Program Certified Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care Program Reaches Milestone. The Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) Program at Kitsap Mental Health Services has recently been recognized as meeting criteria necessary for official certification. The agency’s evidence-based program provides intensive services for at-risk youth and their families in Kitsap, Clallam, and Jefferson counties. This culmination of an extensive three-year certification process is a milestone demonstrating that the local program is successfully implementing the MTFC model. Since 2006, the agency’s program has placed 22 youth ages 12 to 17 years in the homes of specially trained, licensed foster parents who work in cooperation with the MTFC clinical staff to help youth rebuild their lives and reunify with their families. Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care is known as an effective, structured alternative to long-term inpatient care for youth with serious mental and behavioral health issues. The MTFC program at Kitsap Mental Health Services is a pilot project funded by the Washington State Mental Health Division. More information about the MTFC program is available by contacting program supervisor Carol Lambias at (360) 479-4994.
